Online Genetics Resources

This page contains links to online genetics courses. Some are free, and some are a nominal fee. All are a good way to brush up on genetics, and get a better handle on how DNA tests are developed, and how breeders and puppy buyers can use DNA test results knowledge to make better decisions.

Centronuclear Myopathy website: Although not recognized as a disorder of Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, CNM occurs in Labrador Retriever lines. This site has a good overview of genetics, and the process underlying the development of DNA-based tests. Also good advice for how to use DNA test results in a breeding decision tree.

DNA From the Beginning: A clear, concise course covering sevral modules, from basic Mendelian genetics, all the way to molegular genetics and how DNA tests are developed.

Evolutionary Genetics: Online course notes from the 2007/2008 academic year, University College of London, England.

Genetics Home Reference: Written about human genetics, but DNA works the same in all species. A good basic reference available online, or by a downloadable PDF copy of the book.

GENUP: Free downloadable modules on Quantative Genetics and how it relates to animal breeding. From the University of New England, Australia.

Principles of Genetics: A more formal course, with in-depth course materials, quizzes, and self-assessment tools. Available for a nominal fee.
